Historic architecture and panoramic views of the bay—San Francisco Art Institute is a stunning backdrop for receptions, wedding celebrations, photography shoots, film screenings, and other special events.

SFAI has a campus overlooking the San Francisco Bay and offers a variety of spaces and facilities. It is nestled in San Francisco’s historic Russian Hill, adjacent to North Beach and Fisherman’s Wharf.

A striking combination of Mediterranean-style architecture and Corbusian concrete, SFAI’s historic landmark campus is comprised of multiple tiers and spaces.

SFAI offers indoor and outdoor spaces on our historic landmark campus in Russian Hill, including the Zellerbach Quad, SFAI Café, Roof Terrace, Courtyard, and a variety of studios and meeting rooms.

SFAI welcomes weddings, private parties, conferences, corporate functions, meetings, lectures, film screenings, and more. We do not host political events or events for minors (such as proms). Promotional events and fundraisers are evaluated on a case-by-case basis. All art displays or performances must be pre-approved by SFAI. 

Facility rentals are primarily available on evenings, weekends, and summer months. Please get in touch with us to check the availability of specific dates. 

Availability varies depending on the season. We recommend booking at least six months in advance, especially for larger events. However, you never know. It's been an extraordinary year for events. Please contact us for more information regarding our calendar. 

Our campus is located in a residential area, and we require that all events end by 10 pm out of respect for our neighbors. Music must stop by 9 pm, and the last load must be out by 10 pm. 

All permits are the responsibility of the renter. Tents larger than 20 x 20 feet require a permit, as does any open flame or heating element. You can obtain these permits from SFFD Administration Office on Second and Townsend Streets in San Francisco. 

Even on sunny days, it can be chilly in San Francisco. Our outdoor spaces can be tented and heated with the appropriate permits. For outdoor events, you might also consider renting an indoor space, such as the SFAI Café, which offers beautiful views without the worry of rain and wind. 

SFAI has two private parking lots that are available to rent. In addition, street parking is permitted for two hours from 8 am–9 pm, Monday through Saturday, in the area. 

Our galleries are open to the public, and we welcome visitors. We do not rent out our gallery space at SFAI, but you can arrange to have it available outside of the regular hours of operation for special events. And it's a little nuts to come and not see the Diego Rivera mural

A caterer or other licensed and insured provider must provide and serve food and liquor. 

The SFAI Café features a full kitchen and a dining area that can be rented. The user will use the sinks, prep table, counters, stove, and ovens. However, the user will need to negotiate access to SFAI’s appliances, including refrigeration, ice maker, dishwasher, cookware, cutlery, etc. 

Only SFAI Café rentals come with tables and chairs included. We provide approximately 15 tables and 79 chairs. 

Event monitors are required for all events at SFAI. The event monitor is a member of our facilities staff who will stay for the duration of the event and perform specific house management functions, such as maintaining the restroom paper supplies and ensuring security and rental 
regulations are enforced. 

Only SFAI Café rentals come with tables and chairs included. We provide approximately 15 tables and 79 chairs. 

The user is responsible for all clean-up. All trash must be properly disposed of and decorations removed by the end of the event. 

Only wedding packages come with overnight storage included. For all other rentals, storage can be arranged for an additional fee.
