Charles Hobson is a visual artist who works with words and images and publishes limited edition artist books. He received a BFA at the Art Institute in 1989 after a career in law and business and holds a law degree from the University of Virginia. He is an emeritus professor at SFAI and taught about artist books in the printmaking department from 1990 to 2013.
His books often explore literary or historical themes, and include Parisian Encounters, about famous couples who met in Paris, and Leonardo Knows Baseball, which pairs Leonardo da Vinci’s lessons on drawing the human figure with monotypes of baseball players in action. His archive has recently been acquired by Stanford University.
His works are in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art, the New York Public Library, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the National Gallery, Stanford University, the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, and the Getty, among others.
