Jeremy Stone’s early work experience at Allan Stone Gallery, New York during high school and college led to her first museum internships, guest curating and consulting assignments at the Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston, Sunne Savage Gallery and Massachusetts General Hospital, Grey Building, Boston.
After moving to San Francisco, she assisted Price Amerson in the research for Alice Street, the Robert Arneson exhibition at the Richard L. Nelson Gallery, UC Davis, CA, 1981-1982, and Robert Arneson with the George Moscone bust research between 1981-1982 while on staff at Anne Kohs & Associates, San Francisco. Jeremy founded and directed an eponymous contemporary and modern art gallery in San Francisco from 1982-1991. Curating over eighty exhibitions in nine years resulted in solo museum shows for several of her gallery artists. Stone began appraising artist estates, working with non-profits such as LEAP, the Contemporary Jewish Museum, San Francisco, and curating shows for Nestle Beverage Company’s corporate headquarters during the early 1990s. While serving as director of Career Services and visiting faculty at the San Francisco Art Institute from 1994 to 2000, she began the process of becoming an Accredited Appraiser of Fine Art. Jeremy joined the American Society of Appraisers in 1996 after being called to testify as an expert witness in numerous legal cases involving professional practices of the art world, about artists, art work, galleries and contracts.
Jeremy’s practice is national and she works with attorneys on cases involving art in California, Connecticut, Florida, New York, Washington, and Canada. Jeremy has spoken on numerous panels, including Stanford University’s 2014 Conference on Charitable Giving. One Art Nation invited Jeremy to speak at Art Silicon Valley, October 2014, on Art Appraisals, When, Why and How as part of their filmed onsite symposium. In November 2015, Jeremy was featured on Tanager Wealth’s online podcast interview program “What is Your Art Worth?” In May 2016, Stone spoke to the MOCA Projects Council in San Francisco to see the new SFMOMA building. In January 2017 and February 2018, she organized and moderated panels entitled “Working with Galleries, What Appraisers Need to Know” with gallerists Catharine Clark, Martin Muller, Brian Gross, Trish Bransten, and Gwen Hill, collection manager of the Peter Norton Collection. The panels were sponsored by the Northern California Chapter of the American Society of Appraisers, in conjunction with the SF Art Dealers Association, at Rena Bransten Gallery, Minnesota Street Projects, San Francisco, CA. In 2017 she spoke at the Santa Barbara Museum of Art’s Museum Collectors Council Celebrating Collectors Film Series and for California College of Art’s Curatorial Practices The Life of An Artwork class. Jeremy has continued to guest curate exhibitions and installations for various locations including UCSF’s 360: Positive Care Clinic working closely with Dr. Eddie Matchinger under her independant curatorial & advisory practice Cullman Stone LLC.
An active member of ArtTable since 1985, Jeremy served on the executive committee and co-chaired both the Membership and Mentored Internship committees. As part of the Oral History Committee the interviews she conducted with Whitney Chadwick, Cecile McCann, Paule Anglim and Dorothy Weiss for the ArtTable Oral History Project are held in the Archives of American Art. In 2008 Jeremy received the ArtTable Annual Award for Service in the Visual Arts from the Northern California Chapter. Jeremy was the Personal Property Committee Chair and member of the Governing Board of the American Society of Appraisers, Northern Chapter, 2016–2018. She has served on the board of the Oxbow School, Napa, 2003-2006, and the San Francisco Art Institute, 1989-1994, 2006-2009, and 2012-2014.
Stone received a Bachelor of Science degree in Organizational Behavior from the University of San Francisco in 1994. She received an Executive Certificate in Nonprofit Organization Management from the University of San Francisco in 1993 and graduated from the University of California, Irvine’s Certificate Program in Appraisal Studies in Fine and Decorative Arts in 2005. Undergraduate work at The Cooper Union School of Art informed later writing projects for Goddard College’s ADP Program, Plainfield, VT. Stone is working on a writing project right now involving the history of the NYC art world in the 1960s.
