Stephen Mangum has been a full-time artist since retiring from a lengthy career in department store operations and finance. A 1977 graduate of Washington & Lee University, he spent a dozen years with the Washington DC unit of The May Department Stores Company, going on to serve as Chief Financial Officer of Bloomingdale’s and later Pier 1 Imports before joining the luxury goods conglomerate LVMH Moet Hennessy Louis Vuitton and holding the positions of Chief Financial Officer and Global Head of Human Resources for DFS Group in Hong Kong. Since his 2016 graduation from San Francisco Art Institute with a BFA in painting, he has maintained a studio in Sausalito while continuing to reside in San Francisco. In a contemporary figurative realism style, his most recent works confront social justice and racist inhumanity. His paintings have been juried into and won awards in numerous national and international competitions, featured in a variety of art journals and other publications, and exhibited at the De Young Museum and the Crocker Art Museum and many gallery shows. A member of the International Guild of Realism, the Portrait Society of America, and the National Oil & Acrylic Painters Society, his works are in private and corporate collections across the U.S.
