What is an emergency?

  • Inflicting or attempting to inflict serious bodily harm on oneself or on another
  • Being unable to provide for one’s own food, clothing, or shelter to the extent that death, bodily injury, or physical debilitation might result without treatment
  • Attempting suicide or behaving as though you might follow through on verbal threats
  • Mutilating or attempting to mutilate oneself
  • Being acutely distressed by hearing or seeing things that do not exist
  • Expressing serious thoughts about hurting oneself or someone else
  • Experiencing uncontrollable anxiety or anger
  • Having a severe reaction to psychiatric medication
