assume vivid astro focus: actions vent ascending frequencies

The artist group assume vivid astro focus (avaf) remakes dance club rhythms, X-Men powers, and outsized fashion for new environments. Their roller rink actions vent ascending frequencies began as a 2004 Whitney Biennial project in New York City, where avaf worked with the Central Park Dance Skaters Association to honor their regular meeting spot.

Artists have always depicted the important gatherings in life, from religious ceremonies and state coronations to sporting events and lunches in the grass. With avaf, we’re invited to join in the particular magic of a skating life, joining an art work conceived in terms of people and not of objects.

assume vivid astro focus was founded by Eli Sudbrack (b. Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, 1968) in 2001. Sudbrack began working with Christophe Hamaide Pierson in 2005 as a duo that often morphs into a collective for select projects, challenging conventional assumptions about authorship and the role of the artist’s persona in contemporary life. avaf works in a vast array of media, including painting, drawing, installations, video, sculpture, neons, wallpaper, and decals, taking on rigid classifications of gender, politics, and national identity through pop imagery and neon colors.
