Firelei Báez’s large-scale works on paper visualize mythical feminine creatures, imagining the man-eating Ciguapa and other figures through oozing, faceless contortions and dissolving silhouettes. Out of a convergence of science fiction, anthropology, and diasporic identity formation, her works brim with intense humor, formal rigor, and audacious fantasies of resistance. Báez is the recipient of the 2016 Chiaro Award at the Headlands Center for the Arts. Gallery Wendi Norris, San Francisco, will present her exhibition Trust Memory over History in the spring of 2016.

Presented in partnership with Headlands Center for the Arts.
