GRACE ROSARIO PERKINS (born 1986, Santa Fe NM, Diné/Akimel O’odham) Based in Albuquerque but having spent most of her life moving between city centers, the Navajo Nation, and the Gila River Indian Community, Grace Rosario Perkins is interested in disassembling her personal narrative and reassembling it as one that layers words, objects, symbolic color, and signifiers built from cultural dissonance, language, and history.
Through maximal painting, Perkins uses her wide array of experience and identities to create works that are imbued with cultural and autobiographical metaphor. Each piece is made with processes of addition and redaction, adding layers and removing text and imagery, constantly shifting her relationship to the importance of ephemera, time, and self agency.
