Leonardo Celebrates 50th Anniversary at SFAI: The Convening

November 3–4
SFAI—Fort Mason Campus

Leonardo/The International Society for the Arts, Sciences and Technology (Leonardo/ISAST), is partnering with SFAI for the culminating event of Leonardo's 50th anniversary. The event’s aim is to initiate a challenging, vital network-wide experience. The event is designed to bring together attendees from diverse disciplines and experiences. We want this event not only to celebrate 50 years of building our network but also to help us design where we want to be in the next 50 years. This will be both an outcome of design thinking and a sector manifesto.

This event is neither a festival or a conference. Rather this is the culmination of the 33 international celebrations for our 50th anniversary. We are crossing industries, fields and boundaries in order to make deep intentional experiences.

Almost half a century ago, kinetic artist and astronautical pioneer Frank Malina set out to solve the needs of a community of artists and scientists working across disciplines by using the “new media” of the time—offset print publishing. As a groundbreaking, innovative venture, Leonardo represented a unique vision—to serve as an international channel of communication among artists, with emphasis on the writings of artists who use science and developing technologies in their work. The result was Leonardo, an academic journal for artists with the peer-review rigor of a scientific journal. For 50 years, Leonardo has been the definitive publication for artist-academics.
