Contemporary artists and activists are finding new ways to contest the colonial dynamics of the art world—where representations of difference, and claims of progressive ideals, have become masks for museums’ predatory financial investments. SFAI instructor Nicholas Gamso will discuss these strategies, drawing on examples from his new book Art after Liberalism. Of particular interest are place-based, participatory practices that turn away from representation as a singular mode of political expression. Gamso will also make time for students and community members to discuss their own writing/publishing projects and to consider the challenges of writing about politics in art criticism.
Nicholas Gamso is the author of Art after Liberalism (Columbia 2022) and an associate editor at Places Journal. His writings on film, media, and performance appear in journals such as Afterimage, ASAP, Social Text, Third Text, and Texte zur Kunst. Before joining the faculty at SFAI, Nick taught at the Pratt Institute and Stanford University.
