Whitney Lynn mines artifacts from art history and popular culture to produce works that are wide-ranging in both their subject matter and combination of media. Estranging the familiar, she utilizes expanded forms of sculpture, photography, drawing and performance as a means to question the cultural assumptions embedded in things and actions. Her most recent project traces artists’ depictions of forbidden knowledge, stemming from a body of work examining the archetype of the femme fatale.
Born on Williams Air Force Base, Whitney Lynn received her BFA from Virginia Commonwealth University and MFA from the San Francisco Art Institute. Her work has been shown nationally and internationally, exhibited at venues such as the SFMOMA, Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, the de Young Museum, and The Neon Museum, Las Vegas. She currently is an Assistant Professor in Interdisciplinary Visual Arts at the University of Washington and lives and works between San Francisco and Seattle.
