MEMORY UNDER CONSTRUCTION

On View: April 29–May 4
Opening Reception: April 30 | 5–7pm (artist talk at 5:30pm)

There is a tendency to conceptualize our memories as discrete objects within our minds, like a collection of photographs. We might think of memories as places that age and deteriorate but remain essentially the same. If we expect a precious object to hold a memory on our behalf, perhaps this is because we imagine memories in our heads to function identically to our mementos.

Contrary to intuition, Memory Under Construction understands memories not as objects but as procedures. Rather than a simple retrieval, a memory then becomes an instance that is ceaselessly written, rewritten, overwritten, erased, recovered, distorted, corrupted. Understanding memory in this way creates questions for us as artists: if memory is like drawing an endless line, which direction does it go? What happens to the politics of forgetting when forgetting becomes more than being denied access to the past? What role does technology take within the process of memory, and how might we visualize this relationship?
