Over the summer of 2019, a group of SFAI artists collaborated on a large private project to paint a 5,000 square foot redwood barn. Their task was to cover 1,200 square feet of redwood wall-surface with scenes of 50’s and 60’s Americana, with an emphasis on classic cars and racing to complement the sponsor’s vintage car collection.

The project posed many challenges: How could one paint directly on raw redwood? How could one scale with multiple artists and also achieve a consistent flow that would appear cohesive and unified in color, tone, and brushstrokes – as though painted by the same hand? By mixing their styles, the artists ended up creating something completely unique for The Barn, and going through over 100 brushes in the process.

Painting The Barn was a daunting endeavor. It required an enormous amount of courage and conviction. The artists saw this as an incredible opportunity to create something exceptional, and it seemed like a ‘Sistine’ moment. Hence, The Sistine Barn.

This exhibition features photographs of the paintings installed in The Barn, as well as documentation of the painting process.

Participating Artists: Anna Sidana (Lead Artist and Curator), Jusun Jessie Seo, Katrina Magowan, Kennedy Morgan, Yuntong Momo Wu, and Sanghoon Lee (Photo Credit).
