SAN FRANCISCO ART INSTITUTE LAUNCHES PROFESSIONAL STUDIO RESIDENCY PROGRAM One of the country’s last remaining schools dedicated entirely to the fine arts takes a stand for artists in San Francisco, offering 25 subsidized studios to practicing artists in the newly minted Dogpatch arts hub .
San Francisco Art Institute (SFAI) announces the fall launch of the 3rd Street Studios Program, a professional studio residency program offered through SFAI’s Public Education program. In this pilot year, 25 subsidized artist studios will be available in the Dogpatch neighborhood of San Francisco, home to the recently opened Minnesota Street Project and numerous art galleries.
The program includes extensive facilities and technical resources including a full-scale woodshop, digital media station and digital printing lab, black-and-white darkroom, and more. It also offers a supportive artist community alongside SFAI’s graduate program and critical and professional development opportunities. The individual, semi-private studios range from 150–300 square feet and are subsidized below market rate.
“SFAI is thrilled to contribute to addressing the imminent threat to the continued vibrancy of the Bay Area arts scene posed by the lack of affordable studio space,” says Interim President Rachel Schreiber. “The studio residency program aligns with our mission to educate and promote artists, not only in our degree programs but in the entire community. Through offering the crucial resources of space, public exposure, and professional development opportunities, the residency program will provide a platform to sustain the viability of artists living and working in our city.”
The 3rd Street Studios Program aims to build a diverse community of practices and individuals across known and unknown possibilities of contemporary art and culture. For the inaugural cohort, SFAI is seeking artists and others for whom space, shared resources, and camaraderie will open new directions in their work and is interested in supporting practices that are at risk due to the economic climate of the Bay Area. Applications for the program will be accepted until September 10, 2016.
The pilot program runs October 1, 2016 through August 2017. Studios will typically be awarded for this full term, but artists may apply for short-term participation on a spaceavailable basis. The pilot phase has the potential to dramatically increase in scale in Fall 2017.
SFAI-affiliated artists—including alumni, faculty, Public Education students, and staff— are particularly encouraged to apply.
